Detailed description of Ragged Mountain Golf Club

Ragged Mountain Golf Club, is a Resort, 18 hole golf course located in Danbury, New Hampshire, just 90 miles from Boston.

In the summer of 1999, the hilly 18 hole Ragged Mountain golf course opened. The course was designed by Jeff Jullian.

Numerous wetlands, along with an 820 foot vertical change, quickly made the course known as one of the most challenging around.

This course has elevated tees and spectacular views of Ragged Mountain, as well as the surrounding White mountains. There are numerous wetlands, which made routing several holes a challenge.  In addition, stone walls and barn foundations have been left undisturbed. One of the tees on hole #14 was actually built on an old barn foundation. These areas have helped give the course a rustic New England flavor. Golfers will enjoy the variety of shots offered by this target course. The course will challenge with long carries over numerous hazards, tee shots from plateau-style tee boxes and approaches to well-guarded greens.

Double Diamond tees: par-72, 7,059 yards, 74.0 /  139
Comparable to a US Open course. Recommended for those with 0 handicaps or better.

Black Diamond tees: par-72, 6,482 yards, 132 / 71.4
Equate the challenge to a TPC course. Handicaps 1-10.

Blue Square tees: par-72, 5,762 yards, 69.2 / 118
Donald Ross would play from these tees- easy bogey, difficult par. Handicaps 11-20.

GreenCircle tees: par-72, 4,963 yards, 64.5 / 117
An enjoyable course of average difficulty. Recommended for those with handicaps 21

One of the toughest courses I have ever played. "Sneaky" creeks and run-offs wander throughout the course, sometimes not visible from the tees. Would play again, knowing where the hidden hazzards are. Extremely hilly; not for walking. Spectacular scenery, especically at this time of year (Fall).

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area

Maybe because the course will be undergoing a renovation next year, they have decided to do little or no maintenance or conditioning to the course. Faxon and Booth are giving it a makeover. They have their work cut out for them! It could be a nice track. They layout is extremely challenging, going up and down the mountain and over ravines. But for now, the greens, fairways, tee boxes and bunkers were all in need of some serious attention. The greens were spotty and inconsistant, the fairways inconsistant (some really wet, while others dry, burnt and hard) and lacking grass, some of the tee boxes had little or no grass and the bunkers were mostly without sand. For a resort course, it is not marked very well and a first time visitor will more than likely be disappointed. There is no help with required 'local knowledge' on any holes that need a specific carry or lay up. Making what appears to be a perfect shot when hit, end up in an unknown or blind hazard. I have played this course a few times over several years, always hoping that conditions will be better, but always am disappointed. It has the potential to be a worthwhile track, with great scenery and all the difficulty even the lowest of handicappers could ask for, but it will take alot of work to get it into a condition that would bring golfers back.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Worse than average course for the area
